Hot stone therapy , also known as hot rock healing stone massage, uses smooth or textured, heated or cooled stones to promote relaxation and stress reduction by relieving stiffness and soreness. Before the healing stone treatment, the therapist heats the stones to 140 degrees or cools the stones by placing them in the refrigerator.
A wide variety of massage therapy techniques can be used with hot or cold stone therapy. These include Swedish massage therapy, deep tissue therapy, trigger point massage therapy, and Asian bodywork therapy, just to name a few. A wide variety of stone types can be used as well, including basalt stones, river rocks, jade stones, and chakra stones. See the chart below for characteristics of each stone type.
